“Fairy tales are more than true – not because they tell us dragons exist, but because they tell us dragons can be beaten.” (Neil Gaiman paraphrasing G K Chesterton)
THINK! In his classic book, As a Man Thinketh, James Allen observed,“As a man thinketh in his heart, so shall he be”. In today’s language that is ‘As a person thinks so is she or he! Male and female, younger or older, we are all included. Our thinking determines our actions, our results and our identity. My passion is to inspire students to become ‘thought leaders’ – critical and creative thinkers who will change their own reality, and go on to change the world.
COMMUNICATE! To do that you not only need to think well but to be able to communicate well. Next to thinking, great speaking and communication are my passions. To share an idea we must communicate well. To share a vision and hope we must communicate with clarity and purpose. To grow leaders we must communicate authoritatively. For this reason, training the next generation of leaders to think, speak and write clearly with passion has been my purpose. I have taught adults,\ and teens on 5 continents. In my present post, I have been a teacher in charge of DEBATING AND PUBLIC SPEAKING, TRAINING STUDENTS who qualify for national and international teams and awards.
CHALLENGE! Beyond the technical skilling of thinking and communicating, I believe in developing the whole person. Growth of character and world view and the ability to pay that forward and add value to others is a success. Leadership is key. The first person we lead is ourselves and for this reason, I continually seek to empower and equip my students. One of my favourite tools on the journey of self-discovery is the model of human behaviour – DISC. When we know and understand ourselves we can value ourselves, lead ourselves. When we understand others we can value and lead others, creating meaningful relationships, business and personal success and significance.
ADVENTURE. Leadership is not boring. I live this every day! Adventure, getting outside the comfort zone, is what growth is all about. I have taken teams of young people to Peru, Laos, Thailand, Borneo, India and put the learning into practice and seen the transformation that comes about.
As co-founder and co-director of Seaphoenix Pty Ltd, I have developed and delivered face-to-face and virtual courses which have seen lives transformed and individuals overcome personal barriers to achieve personal goals. With qualifications and experience ranging from English to Theology, Customer Service to Philosophy, Education to Leadership Training, my training encompasses an eclectic range of skills and knowledge, delivering transformational training which challenges the whole person.
Patrick Marman is the high-school teacher who most encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone. I had the good fortune to travel overseas twice under his guidance on school trips aimed at developing youth leadership, teamwork, and community spirit. At fifteen, I was part of a Borneo-bound group that climbed South-East Asia’s tallest mountain, spotted wild orang-utans while paddling down a river, and strung hammocks between trees to camp in the jungle for a night. At seventeen, my teammates and I hiked through the mountains to reach Machu Picchu and spent a week helping locals construct a mud-brick school for their village in rural Peru. On both occasions, we students were responsible for booking accommodation, finding transport, and deciding on the itinerary, while Patrick stayed in the background and emerged when necessary to protect us from rabies and pickpockets. These opportunities to experience off-the-beaten-path travel gave me a lifelong taste for adventurous travel, dating back to a teacher who was brave enough to let his students learn to lead.Tara Dear, BA (Yale/NUS)
I spent a year being a student in one of Patrick Marman’s classes. It was the first year of my counselling course, Patrick taught one of the foundational subjects. What a great teacher! Passionate, engaging, practical and encouraging to all in the class. He made the subject enjoyable, simultaneously challenging us to think about what we thought we knew. He played a great part on my journey through to completion.Peter Searson
My experience of Patrick Marman has provided the best example of mutual teaching and learning. A dedicated and creative teacher, he encourages individualism in each student and empowers them to express their own opinions. Always providing surprising new perspectives, his instruction is incredibly thought provoking, whilst his empathy and support inspire the self-confidence to actualise and substantiate one’s own ideas. This assurance emboldens his pupils, providing an atmosphere so collaborative and rich with philosophies and propositions, that even he may be presented with astonishing theories and perceptions previously unidentified. His guidance and enthusiasm pushes his students in the gentlest way to the most dizzying heights of achievement and enables his assistance with consolidation or clarification of the simplest to the most complicated tasks, as well as anything and everything in-between.
With expertise spanning a significant number of different subject areas, Mr Marman’s awe-inspiring knowledge and experience provides his students with irreplaceable insights without intimidation, but rather establishes an environment where all may flourish and extend their own capabilities limitlessly. Sculpting pupils to excel in their command of content and the communication of it (with flair to boot), whilst allowing and inciting, with his own brilliance, a passion for the acquisition and extension of knowledge, skill and imagination, Patrick Marman is a true polymath and an extraordinary teacher. It is an honour and an endowment to receive his instruction.Katya
